Located right next to the rock pools, beaches, and cafe at Knysna Heads, Beacon House offers one of the most enviable locations in Knysna. Here you will find fully equipped apartments with some of the best views in town. Each apartment is fully equipped with a large lounge, dining area, and kitchen, so you don’t have to stress about finding a restaurant that caters to your needs. There are three or four-bedroom apartments to choose from, so the entire family can stay and feel comfortable.

For those in a wheelchair, the apartments are fully mobile accessible with private parking, a lift, and all-weather non-slip wooden ramp access. The apartments have no steps and are big and spacious, making it easy to move around, while everything from the cupboard rails to the mirror heights has been well-thought-out with wheelchair users in mind.

Get Out In Nature

You couldn’t get closer to the heads if you tried while staying at Beacon House, and the viewpoints around here are also easily accessible. There is also a very nice short walk through the forest and along the water’s edge right from the door of Beacon House.

Venture further afield and the Garden of Eden forest walk is another great activity for those in a wheelchair. Here you will find a 1km boardwalk trail through the natural forest. Meander over bridges and streams as you take in one of the beautiful forests in the area. Marvel at the various trees and vegetation as you learn more about the forest thanks to the informative boards along the way. You can also stop and rest at one of the benches or even pack a picnic to enjoy in the forest.

Visit A Wildlife Sanctuary

Want to really take a wander on the wild side? Then be sure to head to Jukani Wildlife Sanctury, Birds of Eden, or Monkeyland in the Crags area of the Garden Route. Here you can see rescued big cats, birds, and monkeys in a natural setting. All three sanctuaries have access ramps for ease of navigation and the wooden boardwalk that meanders through the trees at Birds of Eden is an experience you’ll never forget. The good news is, you can also buy one combination ticket that provides you access to all three sanctuaries!

Spend Time At The Markets

From Wilderness all the way through to Plettenberg Bay, there are a variety of great markets to visit. One of our favourites is the Wild Oats market, located in Sedgefield, only a 30-minute drive from Beacon House. The market is open every Saturday morning till noon and is very easy to get around with flat ground, making it friendly to anyone who has mobility limitations. We particularly love this market for its wide variety of delicious farm-fresh foods and the great selection of arts and crafts.

Go For A Drive

The area around Knysna is home to some of the most scenic drives in all of South Africa. The picturesque Outeniqua Pass will take you through George and over to the ostrich mecca of Oudsthoorn. You could also give the Seven Passes route a try. This route follows the back roads between Knysna and George offering up a range of scenery along the way as you travel through farmland, forests, and gorges. Don’t be in a hurry when you drive this route as you’ll want to stop off for numerous photographs along the way!

Bhejane 4×4 Adventures, with special permission from South African National Parks, also offer a unique guided 4×4 trail through the deep Knysna forests. You can do the trail in your own vehicle with 2-way radios, so it’s suitable for anyone. Meander slowly into the heart of the remaining indigenous Knysna forest, stopping en route to explore and discover many of the forest’s secrets – its ecology, its history, its inhabitants, threats, and its future. Road conditions are safe, ecologically friendly, and not at all detrimental to your vehicle.
