While of course, it’s always possible to tailor-make your stay and include housekeeping, catering, babysitting, a private chef, and planned activities in your stay, sometimes we know you just want to go at it alone and make the most of our fabulous kitchen and braai areas to showcase your skills.

So how do you make your self-catering holiday to the Garden Route a memorable one? Here are some of our top tips:

Travel light

You needn’t do a big shop before you leave home. Here in Knysna, we have everything you need to keep you satisfied, from upmarket delis to big supermarkets. You’ll find everything you need on your doorstep.

One of the best places to shop for delicious goods to make at home is at 34 South on the Knysna waterfront. Here you will find a grocery, bakery, deli, butchery, and fish shop where you can stock up on farm fresh produce and freshly baked goods. You can find out more about where to shop in Knysna here.

Visit the local markets

Shop our local markets where you’ll find plenty of fresh fruit and veg as well as meats and ready-made meals. There are numerous to choose from so plan your route wisely. The biggest and best fresh produce markets all tend to take place on a Saturday morning and our favourites include the Wild Oats Community Farmer’s Market in Sedgefield and the Harkerville Saturday Market just outside Knysna.

You’ll also find a glorious Friday night market where you can nestle down for a meal to live music or grab some takeaways. You can find more details about Knysna’s best markets here.

Try the tipple

Be sure to try out our local beers, gins, and wines. We have several wine farms, breweries, and distilleries within easy reach of our villas. Spend some time at these locations tasting their wares and be sure to pick up a bottle or two to enjoy on your balcony as you watch the sunset.

Get out and about

While a self-catering holiday can be more affordable and sometimes easier, especially if you’re traveling with kids, be sure to set aside a few nights to get out and about. From homely pizzerias to fine dining seafood affairs, Knysna offers some of the best restaurants in South Africa.

You might choose to stay somewhere like our Beacon House apartments where the East Head Café, so popular with the locals, is located just outside your front door for when you don’t feel like cooking breakfast, or feel like fresh fish and chips for lunch, or just want to pop out for some coffee and a cake.

If restaurants and nightlife are more your thing then you can choose to stay central to the action on popular Thesen Island at our Harbour Town Apartments just a few steps from Ile du Pain bakery, the local Tapas bar with lively evening music and numerous other restaurants and activities to choose from.
